LANTERN

Our church, in the middle of its Sanctuary, created a Children's Space. It is a place with some small tables and pillows and a library cart of art supplies. Just prior to the sermon, the pastor who is preaching on Sunday, provides a children's sermon and a project for the kids to do doing while they preach that relates to the day's scripture reading.

This Sunday, the reading was from Isaiah 42, but it wasn't read. Nor was there a sermon. Instead, our church's choir sang a Christmas cantata as the anchor of the worship service. While the choir was singing, I led the children in designing "Light to the Nations" (Isaiah 42:6) lanterns. They had a selection of handmade papers to select from, choosing the colors that would pour forth from the three windows and the door. They also selected three colored beads, some of which looked like paper lanterns. I provided them a "recipe" sheet on how to put the various pieces together and set them loose.

I think I probably had more fun than the kids.

They were able to take their lanterns home with them. It was all made possible by a tiny art grant.
