2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Flötzringer Hell aus Rosenheim. Advent Beer Calendar day twenty-three.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ***½

This beer starts with a butter yellow body and a quickly dissipating white head. An apple juice nose leads into flavors of apple juice, leathery yeast, and light grains on the tongue. Medium mouthfeel. Fairly short crisp and clean finish. Good.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Perlenzauber German Pale Ale. Advent Beer Calendar day twenty-one.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.4% abv. • ****

The body is a golden yellow with a white head and light carbonation. Primary flavors are buttermilk biscuits, leafiness, and airiness. Light caramel underneath. Medium-light mouthfeel leads into a medium finish with a light leafy bitterness. The carbonation provides a light tingle on the tongue. This is solid. Very good.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Bayerisches Vollbier Erl Hell. Advent Beer Calendar day twenty.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ****

The pour is clear pale yellow, thin white head, and quite bubbly carbonation. Main flavors are leather jacket, butterscotch, pretzel, and the faintest hint of lemon. Medium-light finish follows the medium-light mouthfeel. Very good.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Kraftsbierwerkstatt Der Schwarze Bock. Advent Beer Calendar day nineteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 6.2% abv. • *****

My favorite beer of the box so far, as well as my only five-star rating. I wish more of the box leaned this way.

The pour is a reddish-brown body and almost no head. The flavors are complex and shifting. They include beef broth, fruitcake, raisins, light leafiness, a hint of cocoa, and the ghost of garam masala. (I snuck into The Wife's spice cabinet to check and see if the spice lurking in the background matched something and it did!) This doppelbock is most excellent!

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Privatbrauerei H. Egerer Wiener Lager. Advent Beer Calendar day eighteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.1% abv. • ***½

It starts with a yellow body and nearly non-existent head. The flavors are broth, leaves, and butterscotch. Mouthfeel and finish are both medium, the latter a leafy bitterness. The problem is that there isn't much of interest here. It's okay.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schwarzbräu GmbH Marie Hausbrendel Hell. Advent Beer Calendar day seventeen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 4.8% abv. • ****

The pour delivers a clear yellow body with a thin white head. Clean, crisp, grainy nose leads into...
caramel, grains, and a bit of earthiness on the tongue. Medium mouthfeel leads into... medium finish of lightly leafy bitterness. As it warms, some butterscotch candy sneaks into the finish. Initially, I rated it 3½ (out of five) stars, but as it warmed it became a bit more complex and enjoyable, so finally landed on a four-star rating.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Herrnbräu Tradition. Advent Beer Calendar day sixteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.5% abv. • *½ (ultimately: drain pour)

Golden body. White head. Graham cracker. Hint of orange. Leaves.

Then this beer goes full metal. Ugh. Bad can? Bad beer? Who knows? But bad.

The first drain pour of the box. (I got about a quarter of the way through, but there was no way I was going to be able to finish the can.)

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

ÜberQuell Brauwerkstätten Bambule Pilsener. Advent Beer Calendar day fifteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ****½

Whomever is in charge of marketing at this brewery has me expecting a juice-bomb IPA, even though I know that a pilsener has been promised. Then the flavors arrive. Yeast, warm bread, grains, and grassiness. As it warms: graham cracker. On the crisp, clean, and slightly dry finish: leafy bitterness. An excellent lager. More please!

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Feinstes Bayerisches Bier Käuzle Helles Lager. Advent Beer Calendar day fourrteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.2% abv. • ****

The mouthfeel is medium. There is a "lightness" to the flavors, although they are not light. (Maybe "airiness" or "subtle" are better descriptors of the quality I'm trying to describe.) Main flavors are sage, grains, yeast, and grass, with a hint of pear to follow. Very good.

BONSAI SOLSTICE

One of my favorite seasonal events is Bonsai Solstice at the Pacific Bonsai Museum. This year, we went a bit earlier than we typically do, getting there right at sunset (4:20 p.m.) and so we still had a bit of dwindling daylight around. (I would have preferred it darker.) It was drizzling. There were also a lot more people present than in past years. That was probably due to word of mouth, good promotion of the event, and people ready to be out and about after a couple of years of pandemic. But it made the event less memorable for me as we had to navigate people in the way and listen to a lot of chatter. Oh well. I tried to tune most of them out and just enjoy the bonsai.

This year, they added a color-changing light to illuminate the dead wood of one of the bonsai. It was a nice addition to sparsely-lit exhibits. I caught it as it cycled through purple, red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, but the green light provided the best presentation of the tree itself in such low light.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Wieninger Hoamat Weissbier. Advent Beer Calendar day thirteen.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.6% abv. • ****

A hazy gold body and thin white head lead into a flavor profile of yeast, spices, and a hint of biscuit. Spices include summer savory, sage, and a light kiss of white pepper. Medium mouthfeel and a medium to long finish that highlights the spices. Very good.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Teisnacher 1543 Festmärzen. Advent Beer Calendar day twelve.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.4% abv. • ****½

The pour is copper and gold. Notes of caramel apple, nuttiness, beef broth, and leaves lead the way. The mouthfeel and finish are both medium. This is one of the strongest offerings of the box so far and probably my favorite. (But then I'm partial to märzens.)

SELF CARE

This is pizza as self-care. (My all-time favorite pizza, as well as a connection to my childhood.)

Deep dish. Pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and black olives sandwiched between crust/red sauce and cheese galore. Amen and amen.

顎 / AGO

Meet 顎 (ago / jaw), my suburitō, which is a heavy wooden training sword. She is pictured above her sister 舌 (shita / tongue). This particular style of suburitō is known as a "Musashi oar." Master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi supposedly carved a wooden sword out of a boat oar as he traveled to a duel with Sasaki Kojiro, and whom he defeated.

Suburitō are primarily used to practice swings. I've started sessions that are slow and brief, initially focusing on smooth and controlled movements.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schlossbrauerei Hohenthann Tannen-Hell. Advent Beer Calendar day eleven.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ****

The pour is a body of butter yellow body with a white head. The flavors are caramel, broth, and grass. Lurking down deeper is a hint of cherry. The mouthfeel is light but not watery. It is very good.

LANTERN

Our church, in the middle of its Sanctuary, created a Children's Space. It is a place with some small tables and pillows and a library cart of art supplies. Just prior to the sermon, the pastor who is preaching on Sunday, provides a children's sermon and a project for the kids to do doing while they preach that relates to the day's scripture reading.

This Sunday, the reading was from Isaiah 42, but it wasn't read. Nor was there a sermon. Instead, our church's choir sang a Christmas cantata as the anchor of the worship service. While the choir was singing, I led the children in designing "Light to the Nations" (Isaiah 42:6) lanterns. They had a selection of handmade papers to select from, choosing the colors that would pour forth from the three windows and the door. They also selected three colored beads, some of which looked like paper lanterns. I provided them a "recipe" sheet on how to put the various pieces together and set them loose.

I think I probably had more fun than the kids.

They were able to take their lanterns home with them. It was all made possible by a tiny art grant.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Alpenstoff Unser Bürgerbräu. Advent Beer Calendar day ten.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.6% abv. • ***½

This is one of those beers that is in that weird space that there is really nothing wrong with it, but there also really isn't much there. So, it's better than most American "big beer" offerings. And it's not water because there is some kind of beer essence present. But its difficult to determine what really works here.

If there are flavors present, they are bread/biscuit, light leafiness, and a hint of yeast. Perhaps a hint of lemon and a hint of caramel. Maybe.

MESSIAH SING-ALONG

From the contemplation of Advent Quiet Morning to the bolder, brasher, and Baroque-er "Messiah Sing-Along" of the afternoon.

ADVENT QUIET MORNING

This morning, I read poems, pieces, and excerpts from various authors for my annual Advent Quiet Morning. Many of the authors I read this year were those I first encountered as part of my long-distance, by-phone, weekly book club with my friend and reading/conversation partner.

The 2022 version of Advent Quiet Morning ended up in a very different place than I anticipated. First, I broke a bunch of my own arbitrary rules for how this event should look and feel—three sets of readings became four, there ended up being no Lutheran voice, I read more than one piece from two authors. Second, it was delayed by a week due to inclement weather. That meant that in the week between the originally scheduled date and the rescheduled date and time, I discovered a piece that became my favorite piece and the one that really anchored everything for me. Third, due to other events scheduled on the new date, I had to start half an hour earlier than originally planned. That likely caused some confusion for people, many of whom arrived late. I thought it was going up to just be two of us when the time to start arrived, but at the peak of the morning's attendance there were twelve people present.

It ended up being a powerful morning and moment, filled with prophetic voices, pressing silence, and people resonating with the works.

The set lists for the "Opening (to You)" version of Advent Quiet Morning:

Gate
  • "Psalm 24" by Norman Fischer. From Opening to You: Zen-Inspired Translations of the Psalms.
  • "The Blessed Gates of the City" by Scott Cairns. From Anaphora.
  • Excerpts from "Opening the Gates" by Makoto Fujimura. From Culture Care: Reconnecting with Beauty for Our Common Life.
  • "Psaume 24: A l'Eternel appartient la terre," track three of La Musique de la BIBLE révélée. (Another rule broken: a piece of music.)

Mary
  • "Mary..." by Leila Chatti. From Deluge.
  • "Virgin" by Scott Erickson. From Honest Advent.
  • "Prayer to the Madonna" by Brian Doyle. From A Book of Uncommon Prayer.

Body and Soul
  • "On the Virgin" by Catherine of Siena. From The Divine Hours: Prayers for Autumn and Wintertime.
  • "Beautiful Baby, Beautiful Child (a lullaby)" by Joy Harjo. From Conflict Resolutions for Holy Beings.
  • "Silence" by Scott Erickson. Rough draft from his Instagram account.

Mary II
  • "Goop" by Scott Erickson. From Honest Advent.
  • "Sometimes I Wonder" by Kaitlyn Shetler. From a 2019 online post.
  • "Litany While Reading Scripture in the Gynecologic Oncology Waiting Room" by Leila Chatti. From Deluge.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schlossbrauerei Herrngiersdorf Hallertauer Hopfen-Cuvée. Advent Beer Calendar day nine.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.3% abv. • ****

I've had this one before. I liked it then and I like it now.

Main flavors are fruit, berries, grass, light yeast, white pepper, apple juice. Additionally, its a bit flowery and there is a hint of light grains. Each drink ends with a crisp, drying finish with some leafy bitterness.

As it warmed, this particular can went a bit metallic. But I'm standing by my four (out of five) stars.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Zwönitzer Steinbier Dark Spezial. Advent Beer Calendar day eight.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.6% abv. • ****½

This is intriguing and most excellent, complex and shifting. The medium mouthfeel leans a bit heavier than some beers. Flavors I'm noticing include wood bark, graham cracker pie crust, cocoa, earthiness, light leafiness, and the faintest hint of cloves. It has a longish finish that is quite welcome.

More please!

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Landgang Brauerei Helle Aufregang. Advent Beer Calendar day seven.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ****

The pour is clear yellow and a white head. The aroma and flavor are strongly vegetal: wet leaves, sage, cilantro. Beneath that: light buttery biscuits. The mouthfeel is medium-light with a medium finish. That finish is grains and leafy bitterness.

(It's day seven and this is the third helle in the box! What the helle?)

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Graminger Deife Märzen. Advent Beer Calendar day six.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.6% abv. • ****

The body is golden-orange with an off-white head. The flavors are graham cracker, nuttiness, and a light spiciness. Medium mouthfeel. Short finish.

I'm fond of märzens, especially since they were my "gateway" beer to the craft side of things. This is a good representative of the style.

BORN and BRED

"As evening draws near, and in the still air a few clouds can be seen resting on the mountains, standing on the sky rather than drifting across it, or when, immediately after sunset, the loud shrill of crickets is heard, I feel at home in the world, neither a stranger nor an exile. I enjoy everything as if I had been born and bred here and had just returned from a whaling expedition to Greenland."

—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, translated by W. H. Auden and Elizabeth Mayer

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schwarze Tinte Collab Stout. Advent Beer Calendar day five.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 6.2% abv. • ****

The pour looks like root beer. Roasted malts and hints of chocolate are understated on both the nose and tongue. The mouthfeel is medium and slightly oily. There isn't much of a finish.

It's difficult to screw a stout up. If this were some other style of beer, however, it's likely I would have knocked a star off.

(It's difficult to tell from the can who collaborated on brewing this. According to Beer Advocate, it appears to be Tölzer Mühlfeldbräu and Hopfenkopf Brau.)

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Privatbrauerei H. Egerer Meine Grosse Liebe Helles. Advent Beer Calendar day four.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.1% abv. • ***½

The flavors are unsalted pretzel, light caramel, leaves, thyme, and sage. Medium mouthfeel and medium finish. It's okay. I wish there was a bit more to it. As it warms some light metallic notes creep in.

("My Great Love." Not this time.)

THE OUTSIDER and BULLET TRAIN

The past few days, I've watched two "Japanese gangster" films. Some of the things they share in common are their stories taking place in Japan, an immense amount of violence and bloodshed, and being focused upon plotlines involving members of the criminal underworld. That being said, they are very different films.

The Outsider (2018) is about a former U.S. soldier who is being held in a Japanese prison after the end of World War II. This prisoner, Nick, saves the life of a yakuza in prison and the clan he belongs to helps free Nick in return. They offer Nick odd jobs as an enforcer and this gaijin (outsider, foreigner) slowly moves up through the ranks of the clan. He is instrumental to the interactions of the Shiromatsu clan, to which he belongs, with its rival Seizu clan.

Unfortunately, I could find little within Jared Leto's embodiment of Nick to relate to the character. He is cold and distant, which makes him an effective and emotionally disengaged killer, but also makes him difficult to comprehend. We know very little of his back story or his motivation. I think this ultimately makes the movie similarly a bit cold and distant and lacking in motivation.

And the film dabbles in too many gangster film cliches without really presenting anything new or interesting. If you've seen films by Martin Scorcese or Luc Besson, then nothing in this movie will surprise you. Likewise, if you've seen Jared Leto's performances as Joker in Suicide Squad or Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049, then you've seen elements of his performance as Nick. Even though his Nick is more subdued than either the Joker or Wallace, it still feels as though Leto is trying way too hard, but missed the mark on the character and left him without much of a soul (or story).

The one actor who brings some life to his role, at least for me, is Tadanobu Asano as Kiyoshi. As one of the "elders" of the Shiromatsu clan, he breathes life into an otherwise cliché role and is enjoyable to watch on screen.

Bullet Train (2022) is an action comedy about a bunch of hitmen who have been gathered onto a bullet train as it travels from Tokyo to Kyoto. Unaware of the presence of one another, and that they are being played against one another, they are each tasked with various assignments that bring them into conflict with one another. To say more would spoil the plot.

Brad Pitt as Ladybug is loose in his role and seems to relish it. Similarly, the other actors seem to be having fun and it makes for an enjoyable film. Joey King as The Prince, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Tangerine, and Brian Tyree Henry as Lemon bring some youthful exuberance to their characters.

This is also a film centered on members of a yakuza clan, but it breaks through the tropes and stereotypes of gangster films, and the yakuza are downplayed here. For all of the blood that is shed, it is funny at times.

The only downside I see is that it can a bit too witty for its own good on occasion, perhaps in the manner of Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch. And there are way too many lines and jokes about Thomas the Tank Engine, but they ultimately make sense by the end of the film.

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schlossbrauerei Ellingen Fürst Carl Pils Unfiltered. Advent Beer Calendar day three.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 4.9% abv. • ****

Hazy straw yellow body with a finger-thick white head. Fruity, floral, light spices, leafy, a a bit of caramel peeking through. Crisp and clean finish. It's very good.

SWORD DRILLS

Sword drills in the sun and snow of the backyard dojo. Working on "body geometry" and where things are supposed to be. (And where they are not.)

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Kuchlbauer Turm Weisse. Advent Beer Calendar day two.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.9% abv. • ***½

Coriander, thyme, citrus peel, wheat, light caramel. Medium mouthfeel. I initially wrote in my notes, "Just a bit better than meh." That's a bit harsh. It's not bad, but it isn't necessarily good, either. It doesn't really stand out in any particular way. Or maybe it's just not my thing.

BONUS BEER

In the midst of the Advent Beer Calendar, it's a bonus beer...

de Garde Brewing Nelson Hose Dry-Hopped Gose + Tacoma Dog = lunch at The Red Hot.

Light biscuit, Anjou pear, coriander, brine, and tart tart tart. Medium mouthfeel with dry, crisp, and tart finish. Very good.

NERVE BURN

Sword practice today is with full gloves and braces to counter nerve burn. The cold air feels good too.

Shita舌 isn't going to draw herself!

2022 ADVENT BEER CALENDAR

Schnitzlbaumer Hell. Advent Beer Calendar day one.

500 ml/16.9 oz. • 5.0% abv. • ****½

Grains, grass, spices (sage, ginger), a hint of antiseptic Seabreeze. Medium mouthfeel leads into a long and spicy finish. There is a light airiness at the end. Very good.

This is a spectacular start to the box. May it continue this strong throughout.
