CHAMPION AVIAR

My fourth disc golf disc—an Innova Champion Aviar putt & approach disc. Translucent neon green, 166 grams. Thank you to the mother and the father for this one. It was a birthday gift.

The child and I headed off to White River to practice throwing our discs on real holes, especially our new putters. It was also an opportunity to learn a new grip—the control grip. It seems that putt & approach discs are utilized because of their stability and slowness. It allows them to be used for more accurate throws at short distances, hence their name.

The Champion Aviar performed nicely. On hole #2, I was able to hit the basket from 5 to 6 meters away, something I would have likely missed with my Stingray. That allowed me to make par for the hole after a nice drive with my DX Leopard and an equally beautiful approach with my DX Stingray.

It wasn't all glory, however. I still need a lot of practice on my tee and fairway throws. I tend to allow my arm to drift up on the release and follow-through, which sends the disc up at an angle and shortens the distance of the throw. It did allow me to experience some humility, though, and be mentored by two guys who were waiting behind me. They showed me how to hold the disc and think that I am balancing a glass of water upon it, keeping the glass level all the way through the motion of the throw, so as not to spill any of the imaginary beverage.

"You have much to learn, grasshopper."
